SELF-RIGHTEOUS EDITORIAL NOTE:

We want to link politics and music, activism and punk rock- but then there's all the corporate plunderers of the punk rock name and the mega-conglomerate venue mafias. London is so very big and if eroding empire listed everything, we could fill 20 websites with endless music industry promo crap & indie bands playing local pubs. At the end of the day, if a band or 'promoter' doesn't take the time to submit to us properly, they probably don't care to have us to help promote their event. This site is about the DIY spirit, not souless industry-led self-promotion and arse-kissing. So don't be surprised if we don't like that Blink 182 gig you are so looking forward to. If you think that we should be listing a gig and we are NOT, then use our submissions page and sort us out.

As stated before, we prefer to focus on events that are D.I.Y. (as in Do It Yourself). That doesn't mean driving out to Homebase to pick up your pre-fab kitchen interior, it means folks organising things themselves, taking control of their own lives, communities, entertainment and culture. DIY is an ethic that transcends stupid little lifestyle or musical categories and permeates a whole range of cool activities.

BANDS- We'd love to only list unsigned, independent bands and gigs... But, OI!! We can't look into the label details of every single band that we list... there's not enough hours in the day. We list things people send us and things that we like. I mean, we're gonna list Motorhead aint we? At the end of the day, we trust you to make your own decisions.

VENUES- We'd also love to see more truly independent alternative venues develop instead of the big creepy over-priced commercial clubs we crawl into just to see a gig. This can be done when people find their own spaces to hold events... squatted buildings, the odd community hall, your parents house while they are partying in Ibiza, whatever. So don't complain about what we list unless you are doing something positive about it!

FESTIVALS- We only list festivals outside of London if they are FREE, of a socio-political nature or of interest to the D.I.Y./punk scene. Bring back the free festies!!

POLITIX- Likewise, we look to a future WITHOUT leaders, so we keep a critical eye to things organised by vanguard groups (like the SWP, Militant etc)- who'd like to replace one set of corrupt, self-serving leaders with new ones.

DISCLAIM- We don't have time to investigate every single listing of every single event, so eroding empire does not endorse any group or listing posted through us. Please let us know if you think we are helping publicise events that are not down with the wonderful free world of radical possibilities we're working on.

PS- Everything is just for informational purposes, right? ie: we take no responsibility for the actions or lack of action of people using this service or providing us with listings. The real conspiracy is one of intimidation.

HISTORY
eroding empire
was begun at the beginning of the year 2000 by a couple of volunteers who help out at the 56a Infoshop in the Elephant & Castle area of South London.
Being part of a larger network of infoshops, social centres, squats, collectives, friends, punx and the Do It Yourself scenes all over the world, the infoshop has a regular flow of people who are new to London coming through the door and wondering what's going on in the area. Like most infoshops, the 56a is a place where people and groups can publicise their events and display or drop off their flyers, notices, posters and the like for people to read or take away... so we end up with an array of little bits of paper that if put together would represent all the different alternative/ radical events happenning in London.
So we did just that- we compiled all the info into one Free Informatin Newsheet and eroding empire was born. There was already a F.I.N. for London, but it seemed to represent the free festival/Stonehenge scene, and, in the spirit of DIY, we wanted one that represented us (see photo above).

For five years, we pumped out the newsletter... with a print run of about 666 (give or take 66). The winter of 2005 also say TOM embark on other projects and leave eroding in my hands as sole-editor. After about 6 months of this, the printed version was delegated to the dust-bin of history. (see above concerning my decision to discontinue the printed version.) Now most of the compiling and distro of eroding is done online and available via this website or the emailout...

LONG LIVE THE PAPER VERSION!- The paper version of eroding is occasionally printed out for special events and bigger gigs by the good folx at ACTIVE DISTRIBUTION. It is strongly suggested that you get on your cyber-goggles and send all info to the WEBSITE rather than the 56a address (or both) as most of the editing is done ONLINE!

Thanks go to the cool kids at safetycat who help us with the nitty gritty computer stuff and have been kind enuff to give us space up here on the web. A big thanx goes out to all the other people who occasionally help out and/or keep in touch with their listings, info, constant moaning and yapping etc. We are always keen to get more people involved- especially with things like reviewing music, events and zines. It seems like that is one of the week points of eroding- lots and lots of listings but not alot of info or perspective on the bands and groups and events that are listed.

So rev up those typing fingers and send us an email!!!

EMAIL SPAM SUCKS-

We don't list our email address in text form, as SPAM producing robots from hell can get ahold of email addresses and spew forth Viagra and Mortgage junk mail that way. Thus, insert the email address listed above in the "To:" field when you email us. You'll notice that most of the contact info with each listing is in the form of a phone number or a link to a website too- this is for the same reason. We'd appreciate it also if you never printed our email address on YOUR site if you do one for the same reason. Just link to us.

eroding empire takes no responsibility for the over-use of skulls... the appearance of skulls on the site... or the tragic fact that skulls (even if they look cool) are the remains of what was once a living, breathing human- possibly killed in some inhumane way by this fuct up world, possibly having had lived a life of work, servitude and suppressed desires and/or possibly having been able to (worse yet) juggle quite well and play the bongos at various social functions.
