PREVIOUS DEVIOUSNESS

What is BrixtonScum? Is it a gig collective? Is it a group of friends in the South London area? Did it use to be a local football team? Is it an idea?

The following gigs are included here because they were benefit gigs... Some were done by "Brixtonscum GC" and some were done by people in the network of friends who consider themselves "brixton scum." The important thing is that punks put on benefit gigs!
If there is something missing here please get in touch.

Proceeds go to Advisory Service for Squatters: www.squatter.org.uk

June 01-05 2005: ScumFest 2005- see scumfest.org for details

May 14 2005: Benefit Gig- External Menace (Scottish punk based in Manchester) + Refuse/All (ex Riot/Clone with new singer) + Striker (London) + Beyond Repair (London)@ the Grosvenor. Bands on by 9pm! £4, 'cause it's a benefit for groups organising against the g8 summit in Scotland this July. http://www.dissent.org.uk

April 20: Gig- Madame Germen (epic thunderings from Spain with violin, think Zorn, Remains Of The Day & Neurosis) + Headjam (festive dub/punk unit) + Refuse/All (old-school punk aka Riot/Clone with a new singer) + Easpa Measa (Irish His Hero is Crust) @ the Grosvenor. Bands on by 8.30pm! (so you losers can get home.) Only £2.50 (cheaper than a pint, so no blagging you scumbags!) Aaarrrghhh... what an amazing gig! Lots of people showed up despite it being mid-week and the bands just shredded. Not many people did their blag routine at the door because of the cheap price, so we were able to pay the touring bands' petrol and give a little to the local talent as well. A massive £15 was taken for the ongoing equipment fund, £14 for band food leaving us no money for beer and cigarettes! But seriously, if turnouts continue to be this healthy, we will be able to do proper benefits for all the good causes we'd like to support. Bring back the benefit gigs!!!
Mucho gracias to Rick PA, Frank & the pub, everyone who helped out, the bands of course and you, the punter, for coming along and havin' a larf.

Monday April 04th: Benefit Gig- Unkind (melodic crust from Tampere Finland) + Filthpact (fast grindy crust from Aberdeen) + Give Up All Hope (gloomy crusty punk from da gutter) + Atomgevitter (Scotland) + After the Massacre (Liverpool, self-described as E.N.T. with tits) @ the Grosvenor. £4. Doors 8.30pm. A benefit to help maintain the equipment we use to put on these benefit gigs. The backline needs your help!!! Not sure at the moment how much dosh this gig raised, but I think after paying the touring bands and a night of brutal noisey crust the backline was weeping tears of blood and showing the signs of martyrhood. We probably made about £30-40 to help maintain the gear and every little bit helps. More equipment benefits in the future. Thanks go out to all the bands, all the punks, the venue, Scarey Mary for the excellent flyer design (AberdEEn! hee hee) and GianLuca for sorting it out.

Friday March 18th: Benefit Gig- for Eroding Empire, free London DIY events listing w/ the Sharon's (S. London garagey rock n roll baby!) + Dirty Fuzz ( the MC5 meet the Stooges in Motown S. London ) + Black Time (N.London lo-fi trashy garage-punk, the Germs meet the Cramps & the Fall) + SPECIAL GUESTS Zounds (old school anarcho punk songsters) @ the Grov'. A big thanks to all the amazing bands who played and the people who helped out and came to the gig; Unfortunately due to a smallish turn-out we just covered costs on this gig... so there wasn't any dosh raised to publish Eroding Empire (in fact, we lost a small amount as did the collective). I guess the punks don't like Rn'R! I did... it was a great night and the blands blew dreary crust out of the water! Zoundz made a last minute appearance and all the blagging scum who'd been out in the bar area poo-poo'ing the gig finally made their way to try to sneak in to see the only band they'd ever heard of. Zoundz were in good form and it was (musically not financially) a good gig. (the opinion of -Em)

Friday March 04th, 2005: Benefit Gig- Doom (grind crust legends and the inspiration for many a crusty patch on many a grimey pair of trousers the world over) + Bait (Norwich, Heavy duty dark, twisted and abrasive metallic hardcore, ex Deviated Instinct/ SpineWrench www.thebaitvoid.com ) + Give Up All Hope (formerly Condemned to Oppression & Anti Citex, Brixton D-beat Armageddon) + Rabies Babies (London lady led punk) @ the Grov'. £4, bands on by 9pm. A benefit for the 1in12 Club in Bradford, who are building their own DIY recording studio in their fabulous peoples' power premesis. www.1in12.go-legend.net This gig raised over £400 for the 1 in 12 Club and was a huge success! Thanks to all the bands, especially DOOM who had so much trouble trying to get down to London.

Friday February 18th 2005: Benefit Gig- Inner Terrestrials (finest ska-punk in the universe) + Rhythms of Resistance (unplugged sambe frenzy & visuals) + Cupid Stunt (bearded ladies playing punk-reggae from Brum) + The Kut (all girl 3 piece new cross rock) + Among the Missing (Hardcore) @ the Grosvenor. Benefit for CIPO-RFM, indiginous anarchists resisting globalisation in Oaxaca, Mexico. Thanks to all the bands and people involved in getting this benefit gig off the ground. An amazing £525.09 was raised for the CIPO-RFM & the costs associated with activists from this organisation travelling to the UK to have a speaking tour. Even after their airfare back to Mexico, there will be money left to deposit directly into the organisations bank account. If you'd like to know more about the CIPO-RFM, then visit www.nodo50.org/cipo/

Sat January 29: Benefit Gig- Zoundz (anarcho-punk pioneers, contempories of Crass) + Los Cherrees (original old school anarcho) + Bottle Job (London street oi punk) + Stryker (London) + Anti-Citex (formerly known as Condemned to Oppression, D-beat punk with ex-members of Doom/Health Hazard, Nailbiter etc) @ the Grosvenor. A benefit for the Advisory Service for Squatters www.squat.freeserve.co.uk . £4, bands on by 9pm etc etc. Instead of an event review, we include the following email from the Advisory Service for Squatters, for whom the event was held: "Dear Brixton Scum, thanks a lot for doing the benefit and for all the lovely dosh.
We've just been handed £250 from you, which will go on our phone bill."

Tues 21 December 2004: Benefit Gig- Hardskin (Sarf London faux Oi Oi Oi) + the Restarts (jagged shout along punk) + the Ulcers (S. London garage rock) + Rabies Babies + the Clashettes (punk cabaret)@ the Grosvenor, 17 Sidney Rd SW9 (off Stockwell Rd between Stockwell & Brixton tubes). Doors 8.30pm, bands on 9pm. £5 = a benefit for autonomous social projects in the Chiapas region of Mexico.. BACK OF THE NET! This gig was hugely sucessful and raised nearly £700 for the benefit. Thanks to everyone who came (sorry about the advance tickets malarky), Martin for his organising hardwork, THE BANDS, the Grov' staff & the guy who was first in the que (he didn't have a ticket and tried to blag in for cheap... hah!) This money will be used to do social projects (water, toilets, schools etc) in the indiginous regions of Mexico.

Fri 26 November 2004: Benefit Gig- Visions of War (dark gloomy crusty punx from Belgium) + Condemned to Oppression (ex- Nailbiter, Doom, Health Hazard, Suffer supergroup) + Morto Goons @ the Grosvenor, 17 Sidney Rd, corner of Sidney and Aytoun Rd, SW9 (off Stockwell Rd between Stockwell & Brixton tubes). Doors 8pm, bands on 9m (early!). £3. A benefit for the Advisory Service for Squatters (A.S.S.)

Fri 12 November 2004: Benefit Gig- Riot/Clone (old skool anarcho punk) + The Deathskulls (80's HC) + Politicide (punk) + Among the Missing (evil sounding metal HC) + Silvermachine (hits you like a rock torpedo, ex-Nailbiter/ Ruthless) @ the Grosvenor. A benefit for autonomous social projects in the Chiapas region of Mexico.. This event went very well and, despite collective members spending over an hour putting up kilometers of camaflouge netting and then initial sound/set-up problems, the gig was a success. Lots of people showed up to see the bands and the new space. No aggro, a few broken pint glasses, the occasional power cut, the usual. Due to the amount of bands playing and costs, only £30 was raised for the Mexican solidarity group, but there is another benefit for the same group in December so together that should amount to a bit more funds. Thanks to all the bands, all the punters, Rick the sound guy, the Grovsenor and everyone who humphed equipment. Nice one... see you in two weeks!

NAME CHANGE-
Some of the people who are/were involved in brixton scum were previously in a gig collective called: innit4life

All the below gigs and events were organised under the name of INNIT4LIFE:

Sunday 26th September 2004
Brockwell Park Games & Scumbag Olympics
After not happenning this late April as is the tradition, the annual game-playing punx picnic was hastily organised for Sat the 25th or Sun the 26th of September. Well on our way to autumn, Saturday was a wash out as it pissed down with rain all day. So we re-grouped and met up the following day in Brixton's Brockwell Park. Games this year included the infamous Drunk Brick Throwing Contest, 3-legged race, a treasure hunt (that included getting total strangers to either sing and dance or introduce us to their dog), 50 yard dash with a full pint glass etc etc. Unfortunately one punk house in Brixton won about all the prizes (darts trophies that we found in a squatted pub in Norf London) so we think that they must have cheated. Hopefully we'll have another one next year, probably more smack dab in the middle of summer as both April and September are a little wet for picnics. See you then!

Sunday 1st August 2004
Punx with Kids Picnic
"Beat on the Brat," a punx picnic for punx with kids or their child-friendly mates
@ Brockwell Park, 3pm. (meet just up the grass from the Childrens' Play Area on the North end of the park- Brixton Water Lane or Effra Road entrances)
Bring games to play, veggie food to share, enthusiasm, yer offspring, the lot... don't get too pissed. There may be some birth control workshops as well (joke).
Breeders unite!

 Fri 31st October 2003
Hallow's Eve Zombie Massacre!
a benefit against (?!) Bloodsports

w/ Kill Kill Kill (bluesey blue in the face garage punk), Among the Missing (scarey-sounding metal HC), Team Nerve (3-piece bundle of nerves), Leevil (one man army of noise & mayhem) @ the Windmill. £3 (FREE shot of tequila if in fancy dress- not as a punk!) Raffle, prizes for best/ worst/ most disgusting costumes! 8-11pm.
Proceeds to: West Kent Hunt Sabs

11th OCTOBER 2003
SHE-RAWK
a day of lady-led workshops and music

Dakinis, Blue Minkies, Lady Muck + DJ's UnSkinny Bop & Elvina, @ 67 crawford rd.

This gig went really well. Really well except for the cops coming in and demanding to search for a "suspect", 3 people getting their bags knicked, the crazy drunk people that would show up and demand to get in for free (are the 2 connected?), and my forgetting to bring KETTLE LEADS for any of the amps!!! E-gads.
I think the workshops were pretty low-key, but Georgian and Hoyden did a screenprinting workshop using pre-cut stencils and the London Radical Cheerleaders practised a routine to do during the gig later. I don't know cause me and Patricia were slaving over a hot stove! But the curry pockets came out good... as did P's coconut broccoli stir-fry. Yummmm.
As for the gig, despite all the above, it went very well. I'm not sure if the BlackStar Collective will still be in 67 Crawford Rd when you read this, but if they are- CHECK IT OUT. It's a really sweet space with a small stage, a cafe style kitchen and lots of old walkers still sitting around from when it used to be a pensioners' social space. The kids in the BlackStar are keeping it open to the local communtiy and we wish them the best of luck! Contact
theblackstarcollective(at)yahoo.co.uk or go to www.theblackstarcollective.co.uk to organise or help out there.
For a full review of the gig, see
www.eroding.org.uk/reviews.htm
Most importantly of all, the benefit for Rape Crisis & Radical Practical Self-Defense for women & queers (
feministselfdefence(at)yahoo.co.uk) raised £196. So that is very cool indeed.
A bit fat thank you to all the bands and DJ's, Phil & Rick for PA, people who came to the workshops, the cookin crew, fatty hobbit for driving, random punters at "the pub" roped into helping shift gear, Tami, Elvina & James for impromptu door minding, Hoyden, Blackstarcollective, big ups to G for all the hardwork and emailing bands, plus thanx to the bands that were gonna play but had to put up with all our date changes.

AUG 22ND 2003
SAVE THE NEWCHURCH GUINEA PIGS GIG
ACTIVE SLAUGHTER, TCR, RABIES BABIES @ The Windmill

This gig was organised with only a few weeks notice and was a collaboration between innit folks and the Active Slaughter/London Punx punx. It was not only the CD release party of Active Slaughter's "Ave a Butchers" album, but also a benefit for the campaign to shut down the Newchurch guinea pig breeding and vivisection lab.
We had loads of trouble getting a 3rd act, with CUPID STUNTS, DOG SHIT SANDWICH & SOON THE DARKNESS pulling out- leaving us to scramble around calling bands in the final hours before the gig. Finally a very rusty but enthusiastic RABIES BABIES jumped on board and a line up was complete!
The gig went well with excellent sets by both AS and TCR with the crowd filtering in more and more from their positions outside sipping their carry-outs. The drummer for Rabies Babies was about 2 million hours late, but eventually (as the band all stood waiting on stage), he made his appearance and RB's pumped out some punk rock mayhem. We're informed that they've only practised 3 or so times since a line-up change, so we look forward to them lengthening their set... but hopefully they'll still include some of the covers they played that night. The Rabies Ladies helped us out in a tight spot, so all credit to them.
Due to the overall generosity of the bands, who seemed pleased just to get a bit of food and some petrol money or help with their travel cards, we raised a bit of cash for the Newchurch campaign- about £120!

So a big thank you to all the bands, JJ for his hard work, the get-naked chef, the gear & door crew, Shamish for tolerating the antics of the S.L. Scum, Pete the nicest sound guy in the universe, Elvina Elvis for the sounds (next time we'll get you on later!) and, of course, the punters (just clean up yer own bottles next time, ya slobs!)
